Generic Name: Codeine with Acetaminophen

Classification: Narcotic pain reliever with Acetaminophen - Available by prescription only
Used to treat:

General Directions for Taking Medication:
- Take as directed only. Remember that pain is difficult to manage
if you wait too long. If you hurt, take your pain medicine. DO NOT
try to tough it out.
- DO NOT increase your dose nor use this medicine for longer than prescribed.
- DO NOT stop taking this medicine suddenly if you have been taking
it for an extended period of time. May cause withdrawal symptoms.
- If you miss a dose, take the medicine as soon as you remember.
If it is time for your next dose, take only 1 dose. DO NOT double up
the doses.
- Take with food or a tall glass of milk to prevent upset stomach.
- Drink plenty of fluids to prevent constipation related to prolonged narcotic use.
- See your doctor regularly to monitor the effectiveness of this medication.
Contraindications:
- Allergies - Hypersensitivity to this medication or its components
- Use with caution in:
- Pregnancy and Breastfeeding - Talk to your doctor about the risks and benefits.
- Patients with liver or kidney disease
- Elderly patients
Common Side Effects:
- May occur during the first few days after beginning therapy, but usually resolve:
- Constipation, dizziness, drowsiness, upset stomach, or nausea
Serious Side Effects:
- Notify your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following:
- Allergic reaction symptoms such as a red skin rash; itching;
swelling of the face, lips, tongue, and throat; wheezing; chest pain;
and difficulty breathing
Interactions:
- Drug - There are many medications, both over-the-counter and
prescription, which will alter the action of this medication. Some
include other narcotics, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents, blood
thinners, psychiatric drugs, tranquilizers, sleep medications,
barbiturates, anti- seizure medications, antihistamines,
anti-tuberculosis medications, AIDS medications, and antacids.
- It is extremely important that you consult with your doctor about
dosing schedules if you take a variety of medications along with this
medication. DO NOT take any new medication without talking with your
doctor first.
Warnings:
- Overdose - Can lead to liver damage, unconsciousness, a coma and
even death due to respiratory arrest. Especially if taken with
alcoholic beverages.
- Avoid alcoholic beverages. May increase the dizziness and sleepiness.
- DO NOT drive or operate heavy machinery when taking narcotics.
- Notify your doctor if you are unable to control the pain with this medication.
- Keep this medication and all others out of reach of children and pets.
