An anorectal abscess is a pocket of infection, filled with pus, near the anus and rectum. The infection is usually bacterial, but is may also be due to a fungus. The abscess may be located close to the skin surface, around the edge of the anus, or deeper in the rectum. The most common causes involve lower intestinal tract inflammation, diseases, prolapsed hemorrhoids, or injuries as with objects inserted into the rectum such as enema tips or injections for hemorrhoids.
Symptoms may include:
-
Local swelling around the anal opening
-
Rectal or anal pain or tenderness
-
Fever
-
Abscesses located deeper in the rectum often have more severe symptoms
including chills, high fever, severe pain and painful bowel movements
