Alzheimer's Disease
What your doctor can do
What you can do

Alzheimer's disease refers to a chronic disorder that damages various parts of the brain. Those persons affected demonstrate either a gradual or accelerated loss of mental and physical function. It primarily affects people 70 years old or older. It may also develop in people as young as 40. No one really knows the cause of Alzheimer's. It is not contagious nor is it related to strokes or atherosclerosis (narrowing of the arteries). Some researchers believe that it may be due to aging, genetic factors, a positive family history, infections, or exposure to environmental toxins like aluminum. Since women are living longer than men are, it is more common in women.

Symptoms may include:

Early:

  • Sense early on that "something is wrong"
  • Poor memory; inability to remember current events
  • Finding it more difficult to balance the checkbook, buy groceries, finish sentences while talking, or remembering the way home.
  • Emotional outbursts, poor decision-making skills, and frequent mood changes.

Advanced:

  • Unable to complete activities of daily living like bathing, dressing or feeding self
  • Change in sleep habits; wandering about during the night (Sundowner's syndrome)
  • Lack of interest in sex
  • Anxious and defensive when confronted with memory loss
  • Unable to recognize spouse, family members or friends

Late:

  • Total confusion, loss of memory, and incoherent speech
  • Incontinence of bladder and bowel
  • Hostile, confrontational, depressed, fearful and frustrated
