Page 1 of 3 Basil is an annual plant reaching from 6 inches to 2 feet in height that has purple-tinted leaves and flowering that varies in color from white to red to purple. Basil’s physical characteristics, such as size and color, as well as where it can be found, depends on the variety (Common, Sweet, Brushy, Garden and Wild). Basil is believed to be native to India, where it is considered one of the two most sacred herbs. Today the different varieties of Basil can be found growing throughout the world. In early American history, colonists believed Basil an essential ingredient in a compound inhaled to ease headaches. It is also a popular culinary herb.
